Glade Road Orchard, a plan for the future
Mission Statement
We strengthen the community by connecting families with their food source. By harvesting their own food, herbs, and flowers, families will enjoy healthy naturally grown food, learn about sustainable farming techniques, support a natural eco-system, and enjoy family time in a park-like environment.
The Glade Road Orchard Plan
We purchased this land in 2014 with a vision of making a “you-pick” farm. Most people have had experience picking apples or strawberries, with their families but almost all of the “you-pick” experiences have been in other states. We would like your family to have a local and enjoyable experience picking your own fruit, berries, herbs, veggies, and flowers here at Glade Road Orchard. We are growing without pesticides, herbicides and without GMO: just healthy, flavorful food grown in old fashioned soil.
As we’ve planned the farm, we try to plant the varieties with the best flavor. We aren’t as concerned about uniform size, uniform color or other “commercial” qualities. Rather, everything we’ve planted has been regarded by someone as having “great flavor”. Do you have a variety you wished we planted? Drop us a note.
So far, in 2017 we’ve planted:
- About 1600 Raspberries (10 varieties)
- About 1,000 strawberries (which are struggling a bit)
- 300 Apple trees
- 36 Paw Paw trees (look it up, they are wonderful)
- 50 or so Asian pear and Hazelnut trees.
- 400 – 500 tomato plants
- 200 pepper plants,
- Lots of squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, beans, carrots, onions, garlic, herbs etc..
Yes, we are slow about getting everything ready and we still have such a long way to go before everything is really ready to have fruits, berries and the rest ready for you to pick. It is coming. Come watch us GRO at GladeRoadOrchard.com. I’ll post updates on the website and Facebook pages. So much to learn, so much to do, we are having a blast.
